Challenging Industry Norms: Rethinking Investor Protection in Asia Pacific

A combination of record low interest rates and yield-hungry investors is fueling demand for higher-risk investment products in Asia-Pacific markets. However, recent cases of mis-selling — the Lehman Brothers minibond scandal among the most prominent — have revealed both retail and institutional investors’ vulnerability when investing in products they don’t understand or haven’t properly evaluated.

As regulators rethink the concept of investor protection, panelists from our recent “Challenging Industry Norms” debate address the following:

  • Whether regulations are working, or are they overkill?
  • How has the regulatory environment affected business models? Have investors benefitted?
  • What would improve investor protection and market integrity?
