Weekend Reads for Finance Pros: The Financial Analysts Seminar Edition

Posted In: Weekend Reads

This week’s Weekend Reads is a little different from the usual because I just attended the 60th Annual Financial Analysts Seminar (FAS) in Chicago.

Over the course of four days, we learned about a broad cross-section of topics from a range of notable speakers, including respected US Federal Reserve watcher David M. Jones, author of Unlocking the Secrets of the Fed; Amir Sufi, co-author of House of Debt; Erika James, dean of Goizeuta Business School at Emory University and respected authority on crisis leadership; and long-time observer of currency markets Rebecca H. Patterson, CIO at Bessemer Trust.

One of the standout sessions was a discussion with Ronan Ryan, chief strategy officer at IEX, that was moderated by Morgan Housel, a columnist for The Motley Fool and The Wall Street Journal. Ryan, of course, is one of the protagonists in Michael Lewis’s Flash Boys, the book that caused quite a flap (to put it mildly) about high-frequency trading (HFT).

If this is your first time hearing about FAS, it has a long and storied history: Benjamin Graham was on the faculty and Warren Buffett is perhaps the most illustrious attendee.

Many speakers made reference to interesting and authoritative papers, TED talks, and the like. So I’ve compiled some of these resources, as well as a few articles that feature or were written by some of the speakers, plus some of the press coverage based on the sessions.
