The GIPS Standards — Truly a Global Standard
I was in Zurich last week at the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®) Executive Committee meetings where I was able to participate in several days of interesting and fruitful discussions. As an active observer, it struck me how the GIPS standards have reached all corners of the globe and have become essential to maintaining the integrity of the investment industry.
The GIPS standards have never been stronger, which was reinforced by the representatives from more than 30 markets in attendance, including Japan. Representation by the Japanese GIPS Sponsor at the meetings demonstrates an incredible commitment to the GIPS standards during such a difficult time at home. In addition, more than 60 investment professionals from all three major regions (Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific) attended the meetings as observers.
The meetings were particularly lively when technical issues, such as the application of the GIPS standards to pension plans and retail products and the treatment of overlay strategies and derivatives, were discussed. The GIPS Executive Committee also highlighted many of the critical issues relating to the Guidance Statement on Alternative Investment Strategies and Structures Exposure Draft, which was recently released for public comment.
From a governance and management perspective, the GIPS standards strategic plan (PDF) was presented and discussed, underscoring the important work underway in the near and distant future to ensure the GIPS standards remain current and relevant for the investment performance industry.
In addition, plans for continued outreach include connecting with and educating local regulators, stakeholders, asset owners, and consultants.
As the Executive Committee and GIPS Sponsors continue their work developing, advocating, and educating the industry on the GIPS standards in the coming months and years, it will be important to stay informed.
