Taking Stock: What Value Do Investment Professionals Add?

The third installment of the “Challenging Industry Norms” series, slated for next week’s annual Society Leaders Conference in Los Angeles, will tackle a provocative topic for our membership:  the value that investment managers derive for their clients. The Challenging Industry Norms series examines long-held notions about issues facing the investment industry.

The basis of the current discussion is research being conducted by State Street that is critical of the investment management sector. Suzanne Duncan, global head of research for State Street, will moderate the panel that includes Paul Haaga, board chairman of Capital Research and Management Company; former SEC Chief Accountant Lynn Turner; Rosalind Tyson, regional director of the SEC; and Wall Street Journal columnist and author Jason Zweig.

The panel will discuss the preliminary findings from three key areas of the ongoing State Street research:

  • Aligning fees with client interests, and whether clients are growing restless with their managers.
  • Regaining client trust and steps taken by managers to distinguish themselves in the market.
  • Regulatory or technological changes — which will benefit clients the most.
